Peero

Peero

Author: Hosseini, Amber

Genre: Historical / Social Novel

Year: 2023 | Pages: 134 | Origin: IND | BA Seq Num: 86303

The title Peero is named directly after its central character, Peero (historically known as Peero Preman), a highly significant, rebellious, and fascinating figure in 19th-century Punjabi literary and religious history:

Peero was a Muslim woman born in Victorian-era Punjab who escaped an oppressive life (often cited as escaping a brothel or an abusive situation) and sought spiritual refuge at the Dera (spiritual commune) of Baba Gulab Das, a famous non-conformist, free-thinking Sufi/Vedantic saint in Lahore.

Peero and Gulab Das formed a deeply unconventional, radical partnership. Despite being from completely different religious backgrounds and defying all societal, caste, and religious boundaries of the 19th century, they lived together openly and wrote revolutionary poetry.

Peero is widely recognized as the first recorded female poet in modern Punjabi literature. She wrote 160 Kafis (spiritual/philosophical verses) that fiercely critiqued orthodox religious institutions, patriarchal dominance, and the clergy who tried to violently drag her away from her chosen path

Translated title: Why Don't Peacocks Dance?

Author: Karyalvi, Gurmeet

Genre: Short Stories

Year: 2023 | Pages: 196 | Origin: IND | BA Seq Num: 86281

Mor Pail Kion Nhi Paunde is a critically acclaimed Punjabi short story collection written by the well-known author Gurmeet Karyalvi.

The book functions as a deep, metaphorical look into the modern loss of village life, tradition, and rural happiness.

In Punjabi folklore, a peacock dancing ('pail') represents raw joy, freedom, celebration, and harmony with nature. By asking 'Why don't the peacocks dance anymore?', Karyalvi explores how migration to cities, industrialisation, and economic hardships have stripped rural society of its vibrant spirit and peace.

The stories inside focus heavily on the complexities of rural migration, shifting community dynamics, changing relationships, and the bittersweet, fading ties that urban immigrants have with their native Punjabi villages
